A reader lives a thousand lives before they die… but those who battle cancer fight for every single one.

This month, I’ve joined the Read Every Day Challenge in support of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Every day, I’m dedicating time to read while raising awareness and funds for a cause that is deeply personal and meaningful to me.

Why I Joined This Challenge

Cancer is a word that stops you in your tracks. It’s something that touches nearly every family, either directly or through someone we love. For me, this challenge is about more than just books—it’s about showing up for those who are fighting every day, for the families standing beside them, and for a future where fewer people hear those life-changing words: “You have cancer.”

I’ve experienced the heartbreaking reality of cancer far too many times in my life:

  • I lost my grandfather, my very first best friend, to prostate cancer in 1992.

  • My paternal grandmother lost her battle with cancer in 1997.

  • I lost my stepdad to throat cancer in 2005.

  • I lost my sister, Yasmeen, to breast cancer in 2019.

  • I lost my father to colon/stomach cancer in 2021.

Cancer has taken some of the people I love most, and it has forever changed my family. Supporting ACS is my way of honoring them while helping to create a future where fewer families go through what mine has.

The American Cancer Society is a leading cancer-fighting organization with a vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. For more than 100 years, ACS has been improving the lives of people with cancer and their families as the only organization combating cancer through advocacy, research, and patient support—ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

The American Cancer Society is an organization I trust wholeheartedly. They have a platinum rating on GuideStar, which means they’re recognized for their transparency and impact. When you give to ACS, you’re helping fund groundbreaking research, provide free lodging near treatment centers, offer 24/7 support lines, and so much more. You can donate with confidence knowing your gift will have a meaningful impact.

The Goal: 49 People, $5 Each

I’m asking 49 people to donate $5 each. Just $5—that’s less than your favorite coffee order. Small donations add up quickly, and together, we can create something powerful. Every dollar goes toward funding research, supporting patients, and helping families in their fight against cancer.

If you can give more, it’s appreciated. If $5 is what you can give, know that it truly matters.

How the Challenge Works

I’ll be reading every single day throughout the challenge—books, audiobooks, essays, you name it—and sharing updates along the way. Reading is something that has always brought me joy, peace, and escape. Pairing that with the chance to help others feels like a natural fit.

I’ll post regular updates here and on social media, including what I’m reading, thoughts on the books, and reflections on why this cause matters so much to me.

Why the American Cancer Society?

The ACS is leading the fight against cancer through:

  • Research: Funding scientists and medical advances to improve treatment and survival rates.

  • Patient Support: Providing free lodging near hospitals, rides to treatment, and access to a 24/7 support line.

  • Prevention: Offering education and resources to help reduce cancer risks.

  • Advocacy: Fighting for policies that improve access to care and treatment.

Every dollar donated directly fuels these programs and provides hope where it’s needed most.

Join Me in Making an Impact

If you’ve been looking for a meaningful way to give back or be part of something bigger, this is it. Whether you donate $5 or $50, you’re helping change lives.

  • Share this post to spread the word.

  • Tag a friend who loves to read and might want to join in.

  • Donate in honor of someone you know who’s fought cancer.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping me support this incredible cause. Together, we can bring hope to those who need it most.

Final Thought

I’ll leave you with this: We can’t all do everything, but we can all do something. This is my something. And with your help, it can become ours.
